The Northern Regional Police Command in Ghana has arrested two Nigerian nationals in connection with the alleged murder of a fellow Nigerian, 36-year-old Nkemujika Uzorchuku Eze, whose body was discovered in his residence at Sanzirigu in Tamale.
The suspects, identified as Daniel Victor Eze and David Oko Ewa, were arrested on Saturday while allegedly attempting to flee into the Republic of Togo through the Tatale route.
According to the Ghana Police Service, preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased, his wife, Peace Uzorchuku, the two suspects and another Nigerian national, Godwin Nwafor, were living together in a three-bedroom apartment in Sanzirigu.
Police said officers launched an investigation after receiving a report that the deceased had been found lying in a pool of blood inside his bedroom. A crime scene examination revealed that he had sustained a deep cut to the forehead, while a towel had been stuffed into his mouth. Investigators also found that the room had been ransacked.
During the investigation, detectives recovered a wooden pestle believed to have been used in the attack, alongside other items considered vital for forensic examination.
The victim’s body was taken to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where a medical officer confirmed him dead before it was deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The police said intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of the two suspects on the same day as the discovery of the body. They were subsequently transferred to the Tamale District Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to assist with the investigation.
According to the police, the suspects allegedly confessed during interrogation that they conspired to kill the deceased after accusing him of withholding proceeds from internet fraud activities.
A subsequent search led to the recovery of several items suspected to have been stolen from the deceased’s room, including multiple mobile phones, laptop computers, a tablet, jewellery, wristwatches, clothing, personal documents and other valuables. The recovered items have been retained as exhibits.
The suspects remain in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before a court on Monday as investigations continue.
The Northern Regional Police Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring everyone connected to the crime is brought to justice and urged members of the public to continue providing credible information to support crime-fighting efforts.
