Abule Ado pedestrian bridge turned to makeshift homes

In a coordinated operation on Thursday morning, officers of Lagos State’s Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), also known as LAGESC, joined sister security agencies to clear the Abule Ado pedestrian bridge along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

The operation targeted the bridge’s top deck and the spaces beneath it, which had been occupied for months by miscreants living in makeshift tents and mosquito nets. Residents and commuters have long complained that these occupants forced pedestrians onto the busy expressway, contributing to accidents, including the death of a prominent trader last year.

More than 50 people were arrested during the raid for illegally squatting and creating security hazards. The action aligns with KAI’s mandate to remove illegal structures and obstructions from bridges and highways, improving public safety, sanitation, and free movement. Similar operations at Apongbon, Lekki, Agege, and Obalende in recent years have led to thousands of arrests for environmental offences.

Authorities said clearing Abule Ado bridge is crucial to restoring safe pedestrian passage, reducing the risk of further accidents. The arrested individuals are expected to face prosecution under Lagos environmental and public order laws.
