The Lagos State Government has expressed deep condolences to renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and her family over the death of her son, Nkanu, and has ordered an investigation into allegations of medical negligence surrounding the incident.
In a press statement issued by the Ministry of Health on Saturday, the government said it was aware of Ms. Adichie’s account of the tragic incident, which reportedly occurred at a private healthcare facility in Lagos on January 6.
On behalf of the government and people of Lagos State, the state extended its heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family, describing the loss of a child as a profound and irreparable tragedy. The government assured the family of its concern and commitment to justice.
The statement reaffirmed the state’s zero-tolerance stance on medical negligence and unprofessional conduct in any health facility operating within Lagos.
According to the government, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) to immediately commence a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death. The probe is expected to determine both the immediate and remote causes of the incident.
HEFAMAA has since begun investigations and has already visited the facility involved as part of the ongoing inquiry. The agency will conduct a comprehensive review of all allegations and reports linked to the case.
The government noted that HEFAMAA, which is statutorily responsible for regulating, monitoring, and accrediting public and private health facilities in the state, routinely investigates cases of alleged medical negligence and unethical practices to ensure patient safety and uphold professional standards.
The investigation will be carried out in collaboration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and other relevant regulatory bodies to ensure a credible and holistic review process.
Authorities said the probe would examine compliance with established clinical protocols, professional conduct, patient safety standards, and the roles and responsibilities of all parties involved. The findings, the government assured, will be made public upon conclusion of the investigation in the interest of transparency and accountability.
The Lagos State Government warned that any individual or institution found culpable of negligence, professional misconduct, or regulatory violations would face appropriate sanctions under existing laws.
While urging the public to remain calm and avoid speculation, the government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the health, safety, and rights of all residents and to strengthening oversight of medical practice to prevent similar incidents in the future.
