Persistent rainfall across Lagos is forcing residents to adjust their daily routines as they grapple with flooding, worsening traffic congestion, higher transport costs and threats to homes and businesses.
With the rainy season showing no signs of easing, many Lagosians now rely on umbrellas, raincoats, waterproof coverings and weather forecasts to navigate daily life. The situation aligns with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction, which forecasts a longer-than-normal rainy season and delayed cessation of rainfall in the state.
Many commuters say they now leave home much earlier to beat traffic caused by heavy downpours. Others spend significantly more on transportation or fuel as journeys become longer and more difficult.
Residents also say they have adopted practical measures such as carrying rain boots and raincoats in backpacks, monitoring traffic updates and delaying trips until congestion eases.
The impact is also being felt by traders. While sellers of umbrellas and raincoats report a surge in demand during unexpected downpours, many market traders complain that flooding and persistent rain discourage customers, reduce sales and expose goods to damage.
Students have also been forced to protect books and important documents from water damage by storing them in waterproof bags and elevated spaces.
Across the city, residents agree that coping with Lagos’ prolonged rainy season has become a necessity, with survival increasingly dependent on careful planning, extra spending and constant adjustments to daily schedules.
