The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), has commenced the controlled demolition of the fire-damaged building on Martins Street, Lagos Island, following a comprehensive structural integrity assessment.

LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the demolition is being carried out in line with international safety standards to protect lives and property. He declared the building and its immediate surroundings a restricted and hazardous zone, warning residents, traders and members of the public to stay away from the area.

He announced the suspension of all trading, parking, loading and other commercial activities around the site until it is certified safe. The area has been barricaded, warning signs erected and security personnel deployed to prevent unauthorised access.

According to Oke-Osanyintolu, emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), the Nigeria Police Force, LASTMA and the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, are supporting the operation.

He urged residents to cooperate with emergency officials and report any safety concerns through LASEMA Response Units or the emergency toll-free lines 112 and 767, assuring the public that the government remains committed to restoring safety and normalcy to Martins Street.
