The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has warned residents, particularly children, teenagers and young adults, against using rolling skate shoes and other wheeled footwear on public highways.
The warning was issued in a statement on Sunday by LASTMA Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Taofiq Adebayo, who described the practice as a serious road-safety concern.
Adebayo said the risk increases when users glide alongside moving vehicles, cross carriageways indiscriminately or manoeuvre through traffic without adequate protection and adult supervision.
He explained that public highways are unpredictable environments where vehicles, motorcycles and pedestrians operate simultaneously, making recreational skating on such roads potentially dangerous.
LASTMA urged parents, guardians, schools and caregivers to discourage children from using rolling skate shoes on highways, expressways, bridges, service lanes and other areas where vehicular traffic is permitted.
The agency advised users to restrict skating activities to designated recreational areas, private compounds and other safe locations, while using protective equipment such as helmets, knee pads and elbow pads.
LASTMA also appealed to motorists to exercise greater caution around children and young people using wheeled footwear, particularly in residential areas, estates and school zones.
Members of the public were further urged to report dangerous traffic situations, road obstructions, crashes and other incidents requiring urgent intervention through LASTMA’s toll-free short code 3367.
