BRT bus on fire after it was attacked

An angry mob has set a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus ablaze following an accident that reportedly claimed the life of a motorcyclist at Ogolonto Bus Stop along Ikorodu Road, Lagos State.

The mob also allegedly assaulted the bus driver before police officers and officials of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) intervened and rescued him unharmed.

The incident occurred on Friday, October 16, 2026, with videos circulating on social media showing the bus engulfed in flames.

According to reports, the motorcyclist was riding alone when the accident occurred. However, the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the crash had not been independently confirmed as of the time of filing this report.

A social media user also claimed that youths in the Ogolonto area set the bus on fire, adding that the intervention of a task force prevented further attacks on other BRT buses in the vicinity.

Efforts to obtain comments from the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, were unsuccessful, as calls to her phone were unanswered and a message sent to her had not received a response.

The incident has renewed concerns over mob violence and the destruction of public property following fatal road accidents.

It also brings back memories of the October 2020 #EndSARS protests in Lagos, during which several BRT buses, government facilities and other public assets were destroyed amid widespread violence.

The latest incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of public transport operators and the protection of government-owned infrastructure in Lagos.
