The inquest set up by the Lagos State Government to unravel the circumstances surrounding the controversial death of Nigerian musician Ilerioluwa Aloba, publicly known as Mohbad, has concluded, recommending the prosecution of the unlicensed nurse, Feyisayo Ogedengbe, who administered treatment to the 26-year-old in his final moments.
Presiding Coroner, Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi, acknowledged that Mohbad faced consistent bullying and harassment from his former promoter, Naira Marley, and associate Sam Larry. However, the court ruled that there was no direct link between their actions and the immediate cause of the singer’s death.
The Coroner also addressed the cultural factors that influenced Mohbad’s father’s decision to conduct a “hasty” and “undignified” burial. While recognizing traditional pressures, the court faulted the father for failing to follow due legal and medical protocols—such as obtaining a death certificate and conducting an autopsy—after the sudden demise of his son.
Furthermore, the court held that Mohbad’s wife had a responsibility to ensure he received adequate medical care after sustaining an injury days before his death. She was also criticized for failing to challenge the father’s handling of the corpse or demand a more proper process.
After hearing testimonies from 19 witnesses over an inquest that spanned nearly two years, the Coroner concluded that Mohbad experienced a series of turbulent events leading to his death. The court found that he was failed by multiple quarters—including his family, relevant public institutions, and the music industry—ultimately contributing to the tragic circumstances of his passing.
