The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerians to the circulation of counterfeit Kiss condoms in several markets across the country, warning that their use poses serious public health risks.
In a public alert issued on Monday via its official X handle (Public Alert No. 042/2025), NAFDAC said the information was provided by DKT International Nigeria, the Marketing Authorisation Holder for Kiss condoms and a leading non-governmental organisation involved in contraceptive social marketing.
According to the agency, fake Kiss condoms have been detected in major markets including Onitsha, Idumota, and Trade Fair, as well as in markets across Kano, Abuja, Uyo, Gombe, Enugu, and other locations nationwide.
NAFDAC explained that Kiss condom is a male latex condom designed to prevent unwanted pregnancies and protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as HIV, gonorrhoea, and syphilis. However, the agency warned that the presence of counterfeit products undermines their protective function and exposes users to significant health risks.
To help consumers identify genuine products, NAFDAC outlined key differences between original and fake Kiss condoms. The authentic Kiss condom box, it said, features clear instructions, storage and caution information, complete manufacturer and medical device details, lighter-coloured packaging, and a visible condom image.
In contrast, counterfeit boxes reportedly lack additional information on the sides, appear darker in colour, and sometimes contain plain white interiors with no condom image. NAFDAC also noted that some fake packs display an incorrect or incomplete manufacturer’s address and omit essential storage and caution details.
Differences were also observed on the condom packs themselves. Genuine Kiss packs are light red, with the brand name closely written across six lines, while fake packs are darker, with the name loosely written across five lines and a longer condom strip. Variations were further identified in wallet packaging and the physical characteristics of the condoms.
NAFDAC said original Kiss condoms are larger, oval-shaped, more lubricated, and have a larger teat end, whereas the counterfeit versions are thinner, rounder, less lubricated, and have smaller teat ends.
Warning of the dangers, the agency said the use of fake condoms could lead to breakage, infections, allergic reactions, and a false sense of protection due to poor quality, lack of sterilisation, and absence of regulatory oversight.
NAFDAC added that it has directed its zonal directors and state coordinators to intensify market surveillance and remove the falsified products nationwide. The agency also urged healthcare professionals and consumers to report suspected cases of substandard or fake medical products to the nearest NAFDAC office.
