A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has urged President Bola Tinubu to seek re-election in 2027 based on the achievements of his administration rather than political rhetoric, insisting that Nigerians will judge him by his record in office.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, the publisher of Ovation magazine said President Tinubu does not face personal resentment from Nigerians, but must convince voters that his government has delivered meaningful results.
“The 2027 election will not be difficult for Tinubu if he can show the records of his performance. Nobody hates him personally. Nobody wants to pick him out because they just don’t like him. It is about performance. Present your scorecards. So the people running around spreading hellfire should calm down and channel that energy into showcasing the APC’s performance,” Momodu said.
He also criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for continuing to blame previous administrations for Nigeria’s economic and governance challenges despite being in power since 2015.
According to him, if the Tinubu administration inherited a troubled economy, Nigerians are entitled to judge it by the steps it has taken to improve the country’s fortunes.
“What we see is APC abusing itself and its predecessors, saying they inherited a useless government and economy. I have never seen a place where a party destroys its own predecessors like APC,” he said.
Questioning the government’s performance, Momodu asked: “Now, let’s assume President Tinubu inherited a bad government. What has he done to change the direction of his predecessor and improve the lives of the people?”
Momodu also commented on the recent exchange between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Reacting to Obasanjo’s claim that appointing Atiku as his vice president was his greatest political mistake, he alleged that the former president has remained opposed to Atiku’s presidential ambition.
His remarks come as political activities ahead of the 2027 general election begin to gather momentum, with President Tinubu expected to seek a second term while opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi, prepare for the contest.
