Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has finally joined the team’s camp in Uyo ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
The Udinese goalkeeper was the only member of the 24-man squad yet to report to camp after 23 players arrived on Monday and took part in the team’s first training session.
Okoye’s absence came under scrutiny after a video surfaced on social media on Wednesday showing him with American rapper Cardi B at Milan Fashion Week, where he also modelled Udinese’s third kit.
The footage drew criticism from some Nigerian fans and journalists, with questions raised over the goalkeeper’s delayed arrival and the lack of communication from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) regarding his whereabouts.
Journalist Samuel Areo criticised the communication gap, saying the absence of information would naturally fuel questions.
On-air personality Buchi Onakola also questioned Okoye’s decision to appear in public shortly before an important international fixture, describing it as disrespectful to teammates who had already reported to camp.
Okoye has previously faced criticism over late arrival for international assignments. In June 2024, he was the last player to arrive in camp ahead of Nigeria’s World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic. He was also criticised for reporting late during preparations for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers in November 2025.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper has returned to the national team setup after being left out of the last AFCON squad. He featured in Nigeria’s friendly victories over Poland and Portugal in June and appeared to have regained the confidence of coach Eric Chelle.
However, with Stanley Nwabali back in the squad and Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo also available, competition for the starting spot remains open.
Okoye has made five Serie A appearances for Udinese this season, conceding 11 goals without keeping a clean sheet.
Since making his Nigeria debut against Brazil in October 2019, he has earned 21 international caps.
