The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed that one person died following a petrol tanker accident on Ekoro Road in the Abule Egba area of Lagos on Thursday evening.

The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency received distress calls through the 767 and 112 toll-free emergency lines at about 7:00 p.m. He noted that the state’s Emergency Response Plans were immediately activated from the Igando Base along Igando–LASU Road.

According to him, emergency responders arrived at the scene at 8:04 p.m. and discovered a tanker loaded with approximately 15,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit involved in a lone accident.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the tanker developed a mechanical fault, lost control, ran over a female bystander, and crashed into a roadside shop. The driver was not found at the scene.

LASEMA confirmed that the adult female victim died as a result of the incident. A teenage girl, believed to be about 15 years old, was also trapped in the wreckage but was successfully rescued.
The teenager was handed over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) for treatment and subsequent transfer to a hospital, while the deceased was recovered and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further procedures.

Traffic management measures were put in place to prevent secondary accidents.
Agencies that responded to the incident included the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps.
Authorities said both the tanker and the affected structure sustained significant damage.
