Commuters were stranded on Tuesday morning as severe traffic congestion brought movement to a standstill along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the Sagamu-Benin highway, forcing many motorists and passengers to trek long distances.
The gridlock was attributed to a partial road closure at the Sagamu Interchange, where construction work is currently ongoing. The closure reportedly disrupted the flow of traffic on the busy corridor.
A driver, who identified himself simply as Mr Ade, said the congestion stretched from the interchange area through Ogere Remo, around the Animal Care axis, a situation also observed by correspondents at the scene.
Traffic from the interchange was also seen extending towards the Sagamu Junction end of the Sagamu–Ijebu Ode–Benin Expressway, compounding the delays for travellers heading in multiple directions.
Another motorist, Mr Kola Tijani, who was travelling to Ibadan, said he was forced to turn back at the interchange and take an alternative route through Siun.
“I got to the Sagamu Interchange and found everywhere blocked,” he said. “I was advised to go through Siun to Ogere. It’s really frustrating. I was told the problem is the partial road closure by the company handling the reconstruction.”
Mr Tijani urged the construction firm to review its operations, saying commuters should not be subjected to avoidable hardship due to poor traffic management during road works.
