Several top players reached the second round of the U.S. Open, while Daniil Medvedev sparked controversy during a dramatic five-set match.
They identified Aryna Sabalenka, Novak Djokovic, Emma Raducanu, Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, Leylah Fernandez, Marketa Vondrousova, Jelena Ostapenko, Jessica Pegula, Janice Tjen, and Alexandra Eala as winners on the first day.
They also reported that Medvedev lost to Benjamin Bonzi following a heated argument with the umpire.
According to the report, Medvedev became furious when a photographer stepped onto the court early during a match point.
The umpire allowed Bonzi to replay his serve, which led Medvedev to confront the official and engage with the crowd.
Players across the board competed to advance in the tournament and achieve personal or national milestones.
These matches all took place on Sunday, the opening day of the tournament.
The reporters noted that the games were held at Flushing Meadows in New York.
Sabalenka played on Arthur Ashe Court, while Medvedev’s match with Bonzi happened on Louis Armstrong Stadium.
They explained that Sabalenka and Djokovic won in straight sets, while Raducanu, Eala, and Tjen made strong comebacks.
Medvedev’s reaction delayed the match, but Bonzi stayed focused and closed it out in the fifth set.
Tjen made history as the first Indonesian to win a Grand Slam main draw match in 22 years.
