Tinubu orders probe into Ondo military jet crash

President Bola Tinubu has ordered an immediate investigation into the crash of a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State on Monday.

The aircraft, which was on a routine flight from Benin to Lagos, crashed near a naval base, prompting the activation of a search and rescue operation by the Nigerian Air Force.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed condolences to the families of the 25 passengers and seven crew members involved in the incident.

The President also commiserated with the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, as well as officers, airmen and airwomen of the Nigerian Air Force.

Tinubu described the incident as a painful loss for the Armed Forces and the country, noting that military personnel routinely risk their lives in the service of the nation.

Following a briefing from the Chief of the Air Staff, the President directed the Nigerian Air Force to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash and determine measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

He commended the Air Force for promptly activating its search and rescue operation after the aircraft went down.

Tinubu also praised first responders and the Ondo State Government for their swift response at the crash site.

The President prayed for the repose of the souls of the victims and expressed solidarity with their families and the Nigerian Air Force.

He further assured the military of his administration’s continued support as the Armed Forces carry out their responsibilities in protecting the country.
