Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested a 22-year-old student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), for the alleged murder of a female undergraduate in a hotel in Nsukka.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, noting that the suspect, Emmanuel Gambo, a student of the Department of Material and Metallurgical Engineering and a native of Kogi State, was apprehended following an intelligence-led investigation.
The victim, 22-year-old Deborah Sam-Praise Ememem, was found dead on June 16, 2025, in a hotel room in Obukpa, Nsukka, under suspicious circumstances.
According to Ndukwe, the case was initially reported at the Nsukka Urban Police Division but later transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (State CID) for a more thorough investigation.
“Findings revealed that on June 14, 2025, at about 9 p.m., the suspect checked into the hotel with the deceased. In the early hours of June 15, a disagreement arose after a second round of sexual intercourse, when the deceased allegedly demanded an additional N15,000, on top of the N5,000 already paid,” the statement read.
The disagreement reportedly turned violent, and Gambo allegedly strangled Ememem to death. He then wrapped her body in a towel and curtain torn from the hotel room and concealed it under the bed.
Hotel staff discovered the decomposing body the next day after perceiving a foul odour emanating from the room.
Following intensive efforts, police detectives traced the suspect to his lodge in Nsukka, where he was arrested on July 2. During interrogation, he reportedly confessed to the crime. The police also recovered some of the victim’s belongings, including her iPhone, tablet, and earbuds.
The police said further investigation is ongoing and assured the public that justice will be served.
