A 53-year-old woman, Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in prison for dumping refuse into a drainage channel in Lagos.
Monday was arrested in Meiran, Lagos, on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after she was allegedly caught disposing of waste in the drain during rainfall.
The Lagos Waste Management Authority, in a statement on Thursday, said she was subsequently arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the offence.
Following her plea, the court convicted and sentenced her to one month in prison.
LAWMA warned residents against indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly the dumping of refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations.
The authority described such practices as environmental offences punishable under the law, warning that it would continue to work with relevant enforcement agencies to apprehend and sanction offenders across the state.
Residents were urged to dispose of their waste responsibly and use approved waste disposal channels.
The enforcement comes amid renewed efforts by the Lagos State Government and environmental authorities to prevent practices that obstruct drainage channels and contribute to flooding across the state.
