The Lagos State Government has arrested a bullion van driver for driving against traffic along the Lekki corridor, reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy on traffic violations.

The driver, identified as Mr. Daniel Ikede, was apprehended on Tuesday during an enforcement operation supervised by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa.

According to a statement issued by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, the bullion van was intercepted after it was found moving against the legally designated flow of traffic—an offence prohibited under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

LASTMA explained that the incident occurred while the bullion van was travelling from a First Bank branch along the Chevron axis towards Ajah. During questioning, the driver reportedly admitted to committing the offence, stating that he followed a police escort vehicle that accompanied the van from the point of departure.

While traffic officials successfully arrested the driver and impounded the bullion van, the security personnel attached to the escort reportedly fled the scene and were not apprehended.

Reacting to the incident, Hon. Giwa condemned the violation, describing it as an abuse of privilege, and stressed that traffic laws apply equally to all road users, regardless of status or security cover. He warned that driving against traffic remains one of the most dangerous offences on Lagos roads.

The state government, under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, reiterated its commitment to strict enforcement of traffic laws, while LASTMA urged motorists to obey traffic regulations at all times.

The agency confirmed that the driver and the vehicle have been taken into custody and will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
