The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a state driver’s licence in collaboration with the Federal Government as part of efforts to improve road safety, traffic regulation and faster service delivery for motorists.

Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this during the 2025 ministerial press briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, commemorating the second-term seventh anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

Osiyemi said the Lagos driver’s licence would be launched within weeks and would operate alongside the existing federal driver’s licence system, giving motorists the option to obtain either licence under the joint arrangement.

According to him, the initiative is aimed at improving efficiency, reducing delays in licence processing and enhancing safety and orderliness on Lagos roads. He added that the system would support the state’s transportation reform agenda, especially in digital enforcement, vehicle monitoring and regulatory compliance.

The commissioner also revealed that the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service issued 1,114,080 roadworthiness certificates during the review period under the enforcement of the “No Vehicle Inspection, No Roadworthiness Certificate” policy.

He further disclosed that 737,340 traffic violations were captured through the Automated Number Plate Recognition camera system, highlighting the state’s increasing use of digital traffic management technologies.

In partnership with the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps, the state processed 27,067 fresh driver’s licence applications and renewed 29,810 licences, bringing the total processed to 56,876. Additionally, 1,158 International Driver’s Permits were issued.
