Motorists were left stranded in slow-moving traffic on the Gbagada Expressway, Lagos, on Thursday following two separate accidents that disrupted traffic flow along the busy corridor.
The first crash involved two heavy-duty trucks, while the second, near Charlie Boy, involved two trailers and five other vehicles.
A correspondent at the scene observed significant traffic congestion as officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), supported by tow trucks and a forklift, worked to remove the wreckage and restore normal traffic.
One of the trucks involved in the first accident had been removed by the time of filing the report, while efforts were continuing to clear the second vehicle.
At the second accident scene near Charlie Boy, the five affected vehicles had already been evacuated, while a tow truck was being used to remove the two trailers still obstructing the road.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the agency had been working at the scene since 5 a.m. to restore normal traffic.
He said a forklift and two heavy-duty tow trucks had been deployed, while an additional crane was being arranged to complete the recovery operation.
Bakare-Oki assured motorists that the agency would deploy all available resources to clear the obstruction and reopen the affected sections of the expressway.
On the second crash, he said the five vehicles had been evacuated and that a tow truck was already at the scene to remove the two trailers.
LASTMA’s intervention is expected to ease the traffic build-up once the damaged vehicles are completely cleared from the expressway.
