In a shocking visa scam that has left over 100 hopeful job seekers devastated, the Lagos State Police Command has arrested four individuals accused of defrauding victims of more than ₦500 million through fake promises of work visas to Canada and Australia.

The suspects aged between 23 and 36, worked for an educational consultancy based in Ago Okota, Lagos, where they allegedly collected large sums from unsuspecting victims under the pretense of securing overseas job placements.

The arrests were made this week by detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) following the case’s transfer from the Ago Okota Police Division.

According to CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesperson, the four suspects may not be acting alone. Investigators believe more individuals could be linked to the fraud ring, with further arrests expected as the case unfolds.

This isn’t just another scam, it’s a wake-up call. Over 100 people reportedly fell victim to false promises of life-changing opportunities abroad, losing millions of naira—and in many cases, their dreams.

By posing as legitimate visa agents, the suspects convinced victims they could fast-track employment-based travel to Canada and Australia. Victims were asked to pay hefty “processing” fees, only to later discover it was all a scam.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has urged residents to be extra cautious. He advised verifying the legitimacy of any travel or recruitment agency before making payments. “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” he warned.

Police say the investigation is still ongoing and efforts are underway to apprehend other accomplices. The Lagos Police Command also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting residents from fraud and criminal syndicates.

Thinking of working abroad? Double, check your sources. A dream trip should never become a financial nightmare.
