In a major boost to grassroots democracy, the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has officially presented Certificates of Return to the winners of the recently concluded 2025 Local Government and Local Council Development Area (LG/LCDA) elections. The colorful ceremony took place on Wednesday at LASIEC’s headquarters in Sabo, Yaba, Lagos, where top officials, political leaders, and supporters gathered to witness what many described as a celebration of democracy in action.
Presiding over the event, Justice Ayotunde Phillips Okikiolu-Ighile, Chairman of LASIEC, described the presentation as more than just a formality.
“This event represents the heart of our democracy — the voice of the people being respected,” she said.According to her, the certificates confirm the people’s mandate and mark the successful end of months of planning, civic education, and collaborative effort.
“This is not just about handing out papers,” she said. “It’s about honoring the people’s choice and recognizing the hard work that went into making this election fair and peaceful.”
One of the biggest wins of the election? Voter turnout jumped to 24%, up from just 10% in 2021.
Justice Okikiolu-Ighile credited this to a strategic voter sensitization campaign — including branded public buses and state-wide billboards that encouraged people to come out and vote.
“This turnout is unprecedented,” she noted. “It shows that more Lagosians are starting to believe in the power of their vote.”
The LASIEC boss didn’t shy away from acknowledging the logistical challenges faced early in the process. However, she praised the dedication of LASIEC staff and ad-hoc workers, saying their resilience and professionalism made the election one of the most peaceful and orderly in the state’s local government history.
She also gave special thanks to a wide range of supporters who made the elections a success — from security agencies and civil society groups to youth organizations, traditional leaders, persons with disabilities, market women, faith-based groups, and media professionals.
This moment marks a new beginning for the elected Chairmen, Vice-Chairmen, and Councillors. With their certificates in hand, they now carry the responsibility of turning promises into real progress at the community level.
And for the people of Lagos, it signals a hopeful shift, one where their voices are not only heard, but respected and acted upon.
