The Consul-General Amb. Ninikanwa Okey-Uche has condemned the killing of two Nigerians, Amaramiro Emmanuel and Ekpenyong Andrew, by South African National Defence Force personnel in Port Elizabeth between April 19 and April 25, 2026.
She described the incidents as unacceptable and raised concern over another reported Nigerian death following a confrontation with Tshwane Metro Police in Pretoria.
The envoy said the developments increased worries about the safety of Nigerians in South Africa and rejected any treatment that denies victims due legal process.
Reports indicate that military personnel assaulted Emmanuel on April 20, which resulted in fatal injuries.
Authorities also detained Andrew on April 19 before later discovering his body at a Pretoria mortuary under unclear circumstances.
South African police authorities and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate opened probes into both deaths.
Okey-Uche demanded accountability, saying, “We are calling on South African authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators of the gruesome act to justice.”
She insisted on due process, adding, “Our position is that no matter what the allegations may be, there are lawful processes and steps to justice.”
The Consulate confirmed it remains in contact with South African authorities while monitoring investigations and supporting affected families.
Okey-Uche expressed sympathy to the bereaved families, stating, “We further express condolences to the respective families of the deceased, while praying for their souls to rest in peace,” and urged Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm and law-abiding.
