The Government has dismissed reports claiming that the monthly environmental sanitation exercise has resumed across the state.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, clarified on Saturday that no official date has been fixed for the reintroduction of the exercise.
According to him, his remarks during a recent project inspection tour were misinterpreted. He explained that discussions with key stakeholders are still ongoing and that no categorical announcement has been made regarding the commencement date.
“The truth is, we intended to begin with a sensitisation programme last week, but we encountered logistics challenges. We are working to agree on a suitable date acceptable to all stakeholders,” Wahab stated.
He expressed optimism that the sanitation exercise could return soon, adding that the formal announcement would be made by the Governor, .
The commissioner advised residents to go about their lawful activities without concern, assuring that adequate notice would be provided before any enforcement begins.
The monthly environmental sanitation exercise, formerly observed on the last Saturday of every month between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., was suspended in November 2016 following a court ruling that restricted movement during the exercise.
In recent times, growing concerns over waste management, including blocked drainage systems and indiscriminate refuse disposal, have reignited public calls for its reinstatement.
