The Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) has launched a three-day induction programme for 1,500 newly recruited post-primary school teachers.

Olaoye Olusegun, from TESCOM’s Public Affairs Unit, said the programme is themed “Leading Learning in a Fast Evolving World.” Its goal is to equip the teachers with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their roles.

Hon. Oladele Ajayi, Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Establishment, Trainings, Pension and Public Service, officially opened the event. He said the induction is part of a wider effort to improve education quality in Lagos and ensure that students receive better teaching.

Ajayi described the induction as a vital process to train and strengthen teachers, focusing on ethics and modern teaching methods. He reminded the teachers that their role is to shape future leaders and urged them to embrace technology to enhance teaching and learning. He encouraged continuous learning to meet the evolving needs of schools and students.

At the opening held at the Lagos State Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Ikeja, TESCOM Chairman Victoria Peregrino spoke about the programme’s focus on tackling issues in Lagos post-primary schools. She emphasized the importance of ongoing learning and adapting to students’ needs in a globalized world.

Peregrino reminded the teachers that their work is crucial to nation-building, as they prepare the future professionals of Nigeria. She thanked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his commitment to improving education as part of the state’s T.H.E.M.S+ development agenda.

Earlier, TESCOM Permanent Secretary Mrs. Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila explained that the induction helps teachers who passed rigorous screening to understand current school administration challenges. She stressed that teacher development is key to better student results and the state’s educational goals.

Oyekan-Ismaila urged new teachers to participate fully and see themselves as leaders driving education policies.

The induction programme is taking place at three centres across Lagos and is a joint effort between TESCOM and Nurture House Consulting, showing the value of outside expertise in teacher training.
