Wilfred Ndidi has been officially named the new captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria on the eve of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The defensive midfielder succeeds William Troost-Ekong and Ahmed Musa, the former captains of the senior men’s national team who have since retired from international duty.
The 29-year-old Besiktas midfielder, who previously served as vice-captain, was handed the armband on Friday after the team arrived in Morocco for the tournament and held their first training session.
Speaking to the team’s media, Ndidi said he had already consulted senior members of the squad and appealed for the support of players and officials to ensure a smooth transition.
“It’s a huge responsibility,” Ndidi said. “With the help of the players, I think everything will go smoothly. I’ve had conversations with some of the older players to remind them why we are here. We also need the support of the staff. We’re all in this together.”
Nigeria heads into the tournament seeking redemption after failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following their playoff exit. Ndidi believes AFCON presents another chance for the team to make amends.
“It was sad missing out on the World Cup, but this is another opportunity—another chance to correct the wrongs, put smiles on the faces of Nigerians, and make the country proud again,” he said.
Acknowledging the challenge ahead, the midfielder added that the Eric Chelle-led side is fully prepared for the task.
“It won’t be easy, but we’re ready for it. We’re looking forward to enjoying the journey together.”
Ndidi will lead the Super Eagles in their opening group match against Tanzania on December 23.
