A tragic incident in Ijagemo, Ijegun area of Lagos has left a family devastated after a businessman, Mr. Charles Chimezie Nwachukwu, died following a violent clash linked to suspected land grabbers.
The incident, which occurred on Friday evening, has stirred tension within the community, as conflicting accounts continue to emerge over the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to his widow, Blessing Nwachukwu, her husband was allegedly attacked and beaten during a dispute connected to a piece of land he had acquired months earlier. She claimed that threats from suspected land grabbers had become frequent prior to the incident.
Recounting the ordeal, she said her husband struggled for help after the attack, but efforts to get immediate assistance were unsuccessful.
However, eyewitnesses presented a different version of events, describing a chaotic altercation that escalated unexpectedly. Residents said a fight had broken out across the road from the deceased’s shop, attracting a crowd before tensions intensified.
A man identified by locals as “Olopa,” who allegedly claimed to be a police officer, was said to have assaulted individuals at the scene, further aggravating the situation.
Nwachukwu, witnesses said, was not part of the fight but had stepped in to de-escalate the situation and prevent the clash from affecting his business premises. In the process, he was reportedly pushed, causing him to fall and hit his head on a tiled surface.
He was later rushed to the hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival.
Mr. Innocent Ogoke, President of Attutarie, who arrived at the hospital shortly after the incident, described the moment as devastating, noting that the deceased was already lifeless when he was brought in.
The incident has since heightened fears among residents, particularly within the Igbo community, who allege a pattern of intimidation tied to land disputes in the area.
Community leader, Dr. Anthony Nwaeze Onyiyechukwu-Kachukwu, expressed concern over recurring threats, stating that many residents now feel unsafe. He also disclosed that one of the deceased’s sons sustained injuries during the clash and is currently receiving treatment.
In response to rising tensions, traditional and community leaders intervened swiftly to prevent further unrest. Chairman of the Council of HRM, Eze Chika Nwokedi, said efforts were made to calm residents following reports of possible reprisals.
Police authorities confirmed that at least three suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, with one currently in custody at Isheri Police Station. However, questions remain regarding the identity of the individual known as “Olopa” and whether he is an actual police officer.
As of the time of reporting, the Lagos State Police Command has yet to release an official statement on the matter.
For the Nwachukwu family, the focus remains on seeking justice and accountability. Friends and associates described the deceased as a peaceful and hardworking man who was caught in violence he neither initiated nor intended to join.
The incident has left the Ijegun community grappling with grief, uncertainty, and renewed calls for action against land-related violence, as residents await further developments from authorities.
