The UK Home Office has issued a stark warning to international students, declaring that those who overstay their visas risk being deported under a new enforcement campaign.
For the first time, the government is contacting visa holders directly via text messages and emails, urging compliance with immigration rules. According to the BBC, around 10,000 students whose visas are about to expire have already received the alerts, with tens of thousands more expected to be contacted in the coming months.
“If you have no legal right to remain in the UK, you must leave. If you don’t, we will remove you,” one of the messages states. It also cautions that asylum applications deemed “lacking merit” will be swiftly rejected.
The crackdown follows what ministers describe as an “alarming” surge in asylum claims from former students. Home Office figures reveal that between July 2024 and June 2025, 41,100 asylum applications were lodged by people who initially entered the UK legally on visas — with students making up the largest proportion.
In 2024 alone, 16,000 international students sought asylum after their visas expired, nearly six times the number recorded in 2020. While claims have since fallen by about 10 percent, ministers insist stronger measures are necessary. By contrast, asylum requests from skilled worker visa holders have declined.
Earlier this year, the government tightened post-study work rules, cutting the time foreign graduates can stay in the UK after completing their degrees from two years to 18 months — part of a broader push to reduce legal migration routes being exploited for asylum purposes.
