Minister of Works, David Umahi, has commended the Lagos State Government for supporting federal infrastructure projects and called for additional assistance as the Federal Government begins construction of service lanes and secondary drainage channels along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
Umahi made the appeal on Sunday during a stakeholder engagement on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and other federal projects in Lagos.
He said the decision to construct service lanes and additional drainage channels along Sections 1 and 2 of the coastal highway followed recent heavy rainfall and flooding in parts of Lagos.
“Governor, you have to bring money to do the service lanes and also the drainage channels. We must join hands to solve this problem for the sake of our people,” Umahi said.
The minister disclosed that Lot 1 of the coastal highway had been completed, while work on Lot 2 was more than 80 per cent complete. He added that over 30 per cent of the project had been completed across Calabar and Akwa Ibom, while construction had commenced on the 180-kilometre section.
Umahi assured Nigerians that the coastal highway would be completed on schedule and urged residents and stakeholders along the corridor to support the project and the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
He also condemned the vandalism of federal infrastructure and other national assets, describing the destruction of public property as unacceptable.
According to him, the resources and effort being used to vandalise construction projects could instead be channelled into productive work.
Umahi urged Nigerians to join hands with the government to protect infrastructure, warning that vandalised or excavated roads could undermine the benefits of major investments in the country’s road network.
